1987年10月19日，香港股市受紐約跌市影響，恒生指數收市報3362.39點，在單天内下跌420.81點。翌日清晨，聯合交易所突然宣怖停市四天。結果10月26日重新開市當日， 恒生指數再下跌1120.7點，創下全球股票市場最大的單日跌幅，此次股災促成香港證監會的成立。

On 19 October 1987, known around the world as Black Monday, the Dow JonesIndex in the US crashed, quickly fllowed by Hong Kong's own stock market: theHang Seng Index dived 420.81 points to close at 3,362.39 points. The StockExchange of Hong Kong then suspended trading for four days without warning thenext morning. When it reopened on 26 October, the Hang Seng Index divedanother 1,120.7 points, marking the largest single day decline in stock marketsacross the globe. The Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission was foundedas a result of the crash.
